From to

Dear Mr Holyfen,

As you will recall, the firm of Halpenny and Son accepted you as a junior partner, largely at the behest of Mr John Hampden, despite well-justified concerns regarding your practices as a merchant while in Italy and the Low Countries. I mean those transactions undertaken during the recent mania for the bulbs of the tulip flower, and specifically the scheme (which you claim to have originated) of borrowing bulbs, selling them for your own profit less a miniscule security to the lender, then repurchasing the same bulb and returning it to the lender.

This scheme, which was inordinately successful for you, was declared illegal in Holland following the regrettable suicide of Mynheer Kristiaan Bogardus, a significant lender of bulbs left destitute after the collapse of the market for those items.

This, as well as your known association with sectaries in Holland, and rumors you were engaged in the illegal importation of seditious tracts (not to mention wine from France and lace from Italy, in defiance of the King’s customs) gave my father and I great cause for concern. Indeed, were it not for the consistent entreaties of Mr Hampden, we would have refused to accept you as a junior partner. Our agreement was secured only by the by the contract executed on November 22, 1638, designed to protect the interest of the Firm, whereby you became junior partner in this ancient and storied Firm, for a term of ten years, paying in a sum equal to 47 percent of the firm’s capital, which was £8175.

In the wake our conversation of the 25th instant, it is my necessary duty, undertaken with a heart that’s heavy if unsurprised, remind you of certain points of this contract, a notarized copy of which I have attached.

I draw your attention to item II B 3, the second paragraph: Should you leave the Company prior to the expiration of the 10-year term on November 22, 1648, you are obliged to pay to the Firm the full £8175, plus 12 percent for each year remaining on the term of the contract.

May I now trouble you to turn to III C 4, which addresses the circumstances under which the Firm would ask for your resignation, and thus invoking II B 3. These circumstances include “activity damaging to the reputation and business of the Firm.”

It is my contention that your recent activities are damaging to the reputation and business of this proud firm. Such include your participation in the unlawful arrest of the Earl of Berkshire, your functioning as a commissary for that regiment of Mr Hampden currently marching to the field of battle against the King, and employing the Apprentices about your seditious schemes, including the scribbling of articles for the publication Anglia Rediviva which I understand has not been licensed by that Stationers. I’m afraid to even speculate at what other treacheries in which you’re doubtless complicit.

Not wishing, however, to disrupt the business of the Firm during these dark and troubled times, I will offer you the opportunity to explain yourself, and to amend your behaviour.
